Today I turn 40. Oh, how time flies—one minute you’re young, wild and living dangerously, the next you’re into air fryers and vacuum cleaners. I tried not to dwell on the past writing this but it’s hard not to look back on what I have achieved. Perspectives, after all, come in retrospect—and to quote Freud, “One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.” The accomplishments that I’m proud of are invariably those I have worked for the longest and hardest in life: my art, my friendships with so many of you and my capacity to think and see clearly. The secret to clarity is understanding the difference between what is real and what is not and knowing that what we internalised is magnified, and what others see from outside is very small, negligible even. Which is a reason why I learned to appreciate people who feel things other miss. And those who accompany and carry you. In life, there is no second try so today, I wish on a star, not for another life or something new—but for the mind and the heart to be full.
