How To Go Around the Philippines- In Style.

How To Go Around the Philippines- In Style.

There are more than just 1 way to go around the charming and culture-rich 7,107 islands of the Philippines, and it isn’t by plane! Though a plane will take you to the major destinations fast and easy, you will be missing a lot of the fun and excitement, not to mention the sights and sounds that is uniquely Filipino.

Needless to say, the Philippines is more than just the perfect cone of Mayon volcano or the white beaches of Boracay. Every island in the archipelago has its own personality, its own specialty that can only be experienced firsthand, and what better way to do it than to go around "local style"?

the Saraw jeepney

1     The Saraw is an intricately designed mini-bus or jeepney found in the streets of Manila and nearby provinces. It carries up to 28 passengers and charges very cheap fare compared to buses and taxis. It is a fun way to get a glimpse of rural life and culture in most cities in the country.

balsa

2     The Balsa would be the best way to look around lakes and rivers. You can just sit lazily and drink in the beautiful scenery or be treated to some river-side entertainment at some point in your trip.

kalesa by Jonah

 3     The Kalesa is the old-timers way of getting around some provinces in Luzon. It is a horse-driven cart carrying two or more passengers. If you prefer a more environmental-friendly mode of transport, this is the way to go.

habal-habal

4     The Habal-Habal is a motorbike that carries a number of passengers anywhere from 3-10. It is a mode of transportation common in mountainous areas in the country, and oftentimes, the only vehicle that is available. Though it may only appeal to the adventurous and the extremely courageous, the experience can be quite fun and exciting. Plus, it gets you to the most remote places quite easily and quickly

potpot

5     The Padyak, Sikad, or Potpot is a bicycle with a side cart to carry 2-4 passengers. It relies entirely on foot work, so travel time can be quite long. It is however, the only means of public transport in some municipalities in the country.

Remember, when you travel the Philippines, it’s not always the destination that gives the most enjoyment, but sometimes, the trip in itself has its own rewards.

Great article Yeyey! Lots of fun modes of transport. I know most of these, and have ridden them, by other names in other countries (sorry dahlin', I haven't been to the Philippines yet). I always look for the unique water transports when traveling, might have something to do with being an Aquarius (-;

I have ridden in the ubiquitous tuk-tuks of Cambodia and Thailand. They are sort of like a motorscooter powered potpot. The samlor or bicycle style rickshaw, again similar to your potpot but the passenger cart is behind the person doing the peddling instead of being a sidecar.

A popular minibus, more like microbus, in Thailand is the songthaew. Songthaew's play a transport roll much like your Saraw and Jeepney's. They are small flatbed pickup-trucks that have benches in the back and a canopy/trap over the seating area. They are more common in smaller cities and beach areas where they don't have regular city buses. But they are not as colourful as the Jeepney's. For a colourful ride, it was the "chicken" buses in Central America - old school buses painted up fancy like your Saraws.

Of course horse carriages are always fun. Then there are donkey, mule, goat, and ox carts. but the horse drawn carriage is 1st class!

But I must say, after all the boat, carts, elephants, and what-not's I have ridden in and on around the world ... I am in absolutely no rush to ride on that Habal-Habal thing!!!
