Syria begins New Year with clashes and shelling
Shelling on camps of rebel fighters by Syrian government gunship helicopters is not new to them and they braced it even on the New Year’s Day. The aerial bombardment was carried out to crush the rebel fighters amid the government officials said that international airport in Aleppo has been temporarily closed due repeated attacks by the rebel fighters. The government security forces also clashed with the rebel fighters in several towns to get back hold of a number of rebel-held areas. It is significant to note that the rebel fighters have captured many sensitive military and civilian installations across the violence-wracked country in the last couple of months.
The development has rattled President Bashar al-Assad and he wants to push back the rebel fighters at any cost. An official, who spoke with the AFP news agency on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak with the media, said that the rebel fighters have been making efforts for last many days to target civilian aircraft parked at the airport but their nefarious designs have been thwarted by the security forces. The official also claimed the airport has been closed for very short period of time and would be open for flights soon. The government has also sought help of the army to get surrounding areas vacated from the rebels where they have set up a base.
In the last couple of months, the rebel fighters have been successful in making inroads in the civil war and pushing the security forces at defensive. In fact, the rebel fighters have been struggling for control of Aleppo since July last year and have captured a large tract of the territory so far. The rebel fighters believe that if they succeed to take on airports of the country, they would ultimately be able to paralyze air power of the government. The rebels don’t have anti aircraft guns while the government has intensively been using gunship helicopters and aircrafts to quell the uprising. Against all the odds, the rebels succeeded to capture the Sheikh Suleiman base two weeks ago after having a tough fight with the security forces loyal to the regime.
The development is a clear indication that the rebels are getting strength with each passing day and it appears as if the government security forces have started wearing out. The rebels are clearly getting hold on the government army bases in northern areas near the Turkish border. Keeping the situation in view, neither civilians nor the soldiers could celebrate the New Year. However, a few soldiers manning checkpoints at different places in the city do fired celebratory gunshots at midnight. The civilians would only be able to celebrate Christmas, New Year and other festivals at their fullest after removal of Assad from the presidency.
