Preventing Construction Site Injuries and Improving Workplace Safety

Constructing a building carries with it a plethora of possibilities for something to go wrong. When something goes wrong on the site, usually there are injuries involved, and when the injuries are involved, they are either severe or fatal. Cuts and bruises on the site are a rare occurrence. For this reason, there are many people who are responsible solely for the safety of the workers whose job is to build the construction. The most responsible person is surely the employer. It is up to him or her to implement various management and safety plans so that accidents could be prevented.

These plans deal with how the construction site should be organized and what to do in order to prevent accidents from happening. Here are some ways in which the safety on the construction site can be improved.

Construction site organization

If you have ever had the chance to visit a construction site (which I am sure that you have, since they are a rather ordinary occurrence in any town), you could have noticed that there are many things going on within its limits. Everyone is busy and it usually resembles a beehive. This is why organization and management of both the space and people in it is essential for preventing any mishaps.

So, how to organize? Well, primarily, it is very important how space is organized. This means that everything that is being brought on the site has its own predetermined place. Hazardous materials are stored away from the paths with high traffic, tools (and especially power tools) are not just lying around everywhere, the workers have their own quarters on the site and paths are clearly marked and kept clear and passable at all times. There are also many more ways to improve organization and this is something that the site foreman should be in charge of.

Preventing slips and trips

All around the construction site, there are many possible trip traps. Whether it is some materials or tools lying around or bunch of dirt from excavation, these could cause injuries that are more than just a bruise. It has happened that people tripped over a tool and broke a hip or a limb. Chances of this happening are small, but still, they should not be underestimated. Same goes for any injuries occurring as a consequence of a slip.

This is another thing that can be improved through organization. Training is also very useful in preventing these mishaps. Instructing your workers to be always watchful and training them not to leave their tools around will significantly drop the chances for someone to fall over as a trip consequence. The workers should be instructed to be extra careful when working at heights, because tripping over a tool at the height of thirty meters never ends well.

Reacting to fire accidents

Because construction must involve working with fire and heat in one way or the other, it is very possible that a fire may occur on the construction site. Fires happen often, and it is very important that your workers are instructed on how to deal with such a situation. Organization, once again, is the key to this. If your workers know how to handle fire and how to react when one occurs, the chances of someone getting injured, burnt and even choked will be minimized.

To this end, it is advisable to have one pathway as the major evacuation route from the site. This route should be kept clear and unclogged at all times. Also, fire extinguishers must be readily available no matter where on site the fire may occur. Hire a company that deals with fire safety, and have them inspect the site and decide on what measures should be taken to prevent any fire accidents.

Organization of the construction site is, probably, the most important thing for improving safety of everyone involved in the process of constructing. A well organized site operates like a single unit and when that is the case, the chances of any accidents are minimized, simply because everyone knows exactly what they are doing. This is why there are OHS management and safety plans available. These plans are made to help organize the construction site and prevent accidents through organization.
