Mind Family-A grouping based on neurological similarities.
Many people would argue that it is not possible for Science, Reason, and Compassion to be considered in the same conversation, but I would posture that Neurodiversity is the actual intersection of these threerealities.One need only look at the work of Temple Grandin as an example of a person using Science and Reason for a Compassionate purpose. Temple is living successfully with Autism and has a Doctorate. There are countless others of us who are Different Thinkers who live productive and successful lives, flying in the face of any stigma of “pathology”.
History and Herstory are full of successful Different Thinkers who would be labeled as anything from “crazy”, “schizophrenic”,”retarded”,”nuts”, or just “a dumb girl”.
Neurodiversity is essential for replacing old dead perspectives and limiting beliefs about ourselves and our Human world. From the ground up, it is time to shift Policy and Perception for the sake of allowing our children and their children to be and achieve more.
No one is asking to replace neurological realities with rainbows and sparkles, but it is not necessary to categorize these realities with so many stigmas that the stigmas themselves come before the individual. How many people have doors closed to them still, and are looked upon as “freaks” because their Mind Family is looked upon with such f ear?
We can do better and with ease if we choose as individuals and as a collective to broaden or thinking and open our Minds and Hearts to a more compassionate dialoguer about Human Difference.
