All for the convenience

I may have mentioned before that Stephen is a bright cat with a low boredom threshold. I think I've also mentioned his love of convenience when lazing.

A few days I was typing some work up, and Stephen was lying in his bed, looking bored. He jumped up and went across the room to get some food, drawing my attention by the creaking floorboards. Then he stopped, looked at his bed, looked at the food dish. Looked at the bed.

Sensing he was planing something, I stopped writing and started watching him. He tried to take the end of the plate in his mouth and lift, and then hastily dropped it as he realised that kibble rolls downhill. Then he walked round the plate looking at it. Since the kibble had moved away he put a paw onto the plate and stepped forward for some more munchies - probably hoping it was brain-food.

As he finished he turned, looking a bit miserable, and his paw hit the lip of the bowl. It moved. The kitty head turned back. Claws came out (yes you can see them at a distance - there is a reason we call them meathooks) and he gave the bowl an experiemental tug. It moved.

So he turned and walked backwards to his bed, towing his foodbowl behind him. He stopped when it was right by the bed, curled up and got comfortable and then decided it was too much trouble to even lift his head to eat. He stretched out from where he was lying on his side, put his cheek fur and whiskers on the side into the food, and chewed away idly.

I should get upset about the mess he's going to make since the food isn't on the newspaper, but watching him problem solve was too much fun. We use food bowls with rounded bottoms, or he'd never have managed to drag them - I'm not sure I have the heart to replace them with ones with rims underneath. He's just so proud of himself.

I just wish I could get him on video doing some of this, but the moment I grab a camera he stops whatever it is and rushes across to see what I am doing.
