Grill me a CHEESE!!!
Make a delicious dinner without the hassles of, ya know, knowing how to cook!
So, I was watching the show Archer last night on FX! (a hilarious show by the way, totally recommend it to anyone) and last night in the show the main character asks his mother to "grill him a cheese." Not only did I find this to be a hilarious way to ask for a grilled cheese sandwich, it got me thinking about the best grilled cheeses I've ever eaten.
Without a doubt there is one recipe that comes to mind. It really isn't any different from a traditional grilled cheese with good ol' Kraft Singles and Wonder Bread, but when you bite into this gem, your mouth will definitely thank you!
Step 1:
Go to the bakery and buy some GOOD bread. I prefer Challah Bread (and for those of you who are not familiar with this Jewish loaf, please look into it). A good loaf of bread is typically only about $1 more than a cheap loaf and the taste is far better.
Step 2:
Buy some decent quality cheese. I'm not saying you should go purchase a cheese whose price is comparable to gold or platinum, but steer clear of your pre-packaged/processed products (sorry for that tongue-twister). I prefer Muenster or a good Cheddar. Lots of my friends prefer Swiss; it is all a matter of preference. Here is a good rule of thumb, if you typically purchase Kraft Singles, then upgrade to a deli sliced American cheese.
Step 3:
Get some good jam. That's right, you will be putting fruit preserves on this sandwich. For those of you who didn't just click off the page in disgust, thank you! Although it does sound a little strange, jam is the best secret ingredient. I prefer a good strawberry jam or jelly, or apricot jam works well too. It's really up to your own personal taste.
Step 4:
When you are constructing your sandwich make sure to keep the jelly or jam somewhat centered on the sandwich. The reason you do this is because as you cook, the jam will naturally ooze out to the sides. To keep this meal looking presentable, you want to keep that gooey deliciousness locked inside. Also, if you are anything like me, you enjoy smushing the sandwich down as you cook it, which also makes the jam sneak out.
Step 5:
Heat a skillet on medium heat, butter (or use Crisco) the outsides of the bread. Throw the bread on said skillet. Cook until one side is golden brown, flip it on over, cook until the other side is golden brown; the second side will probably take less time.
Step 6:
Throw it on a plate with some slices of apple to munch on. This will taste great and make it look like you aren't just passing off a grilled cheese on whomever you are making dinner for.
I hope everyone enjoys this recipe, it's pretty basic and I guess i could have just put - 'add jam or jelly to your grilled cheese sandwiches', but what fun would that be?
