Sweet Potato Bacon Appetizer

An Introduction to My Sweet Potato and Bacon Appetizer

Are you a fan of appetizers? Did know that they could determine your success as well as your failure as a host / hostess? Being the ultimate number one fan of appetizers, I know for a fact that any party, gathering, banquet, or get together will not be a victory without their presence. Why is this?

First off, an appetizer is the segment of the menu that prepares the guests for the main part of the banquet, the main dish. A common mistake committed by the host or hostess is neglecting these appetizers. However, as of today, it is good to know that the appetizers are little by little gaining popularity and thus obtaining the respect that they so rightly deserve.

When you attend a party or even a simple family gathering, what part of the menu creates an impact to you? It is the appetizer! The appetizer that is served is usually the dish that most guests remember. It is due to the fact that it is the first significant part of the menu. It is the dish that sustains the guests prior to the main course. Am I right?

These appetizers create the first impression of you as a host or hostess. That would mean that the appetizer is the make or break dish. Why do I say this? This is because if you serve a very bad appetizer, who would want to eat your main, dish or the next dish that you will serve after that? Serving an awful appetizer would be interpreted by your guests wrongly. They might assume that you are not a happy host or hostess.

Sweet potatoes with apple, bacon & maple syrup

Alternatively, perhaps, you are just not good at being one. Sounds quite horrific and judgmental right? This misinterpretation is very true and I attest to this based on a personal experience that I have had at one point of my life. They might misunderstand to a point that they might never attend any of your gatherings or parties ever. What’s more is that gaining back their interest and trust is made extra difficult.

Get this, who on earth would attend parties with terrible food? No one! On the other hand, serving a great and succulent appetizer dish would make you a host or hostess of the year! Your guests will be excited and would even be begging to be invited to more of your get-togethers in the future. Wow, that certainly takes appetizers to a whole new level! Just imagine that the appetizer is the teaser of the menu.

It is the dish that tickles the nerves of your party guests and gets them excited. From the word itself "appetizer," its sole purpose is to increase the "appetite" of the guests. Sounds sensible? After eating your appetizer, your guests should be excited for the main course. That is exactly how it is supposed to be! With this in mind, do remember that the appetizer dish should stick to that category.

You should be careful not to overdo it so as not to overshadow your main course. I would suggest picking a basic appetizer that is fresh, light, and healthy. How about trying my spicy sweet potato bacon appetizer? I guarantee that it would be a sure-fire hit!

What is Needed to Make the Spicy Sweet Potato Bacon Appetizer Ingredients:

  • 1 apple
  • 2 pieces of bacon slices
  • 2 pieces of sweet potatoes
  • ¼ cup of maple syrup
  • 1/8 teaspoon of habanero or any ingredient to add spice to your dish (these should be ground and smoked; amount may be increased as desired)

How to make the Spicy Sweet Potato Bacon Appetizer

  1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Using a large frying pan, cook the bacon until they become crisp. (You may also opt to cook them depending on how you like them). Then, take the bacon out and remove oil by putting them on paper towels.
  3. Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly and pat them dry. After that, slice them in half lengthwise. Then, slice each into cute half moons that are about ¼" thick.
  4. Using the oil excreted from the bacon, sauté the sweet potato half moons until they become golden and start to soften.
  5. Dice the apple into small parts. Then, add them into the pan. Add in the maple syrup and cook for a few minutes until the apple cubes slightly soften.
  6. Cut up / crumble the bacon into tiny bits and add them into the pan. (It is up to you how tiny you want to crumble the bacon). Then, add a dash of habanero or any chosen spice and stir.
  7. Lastly, set everything into a casserole dish. Bake the dish for about 20-30 minutes (or until the sweet potatoes are cooked enough). This dish serves 4 people.

We all know that bacon is one of everyone’s favorite. Correct? Its pure deliciousness, even without any paired dishes, proves how this food can stand alone in any meal. However, it is important to take note that because of the fat content of bacon, it is best to pair it with a healthy ingredient such as sweet potatoes!

Did you know that sweet potatoes contain beta carotene and vitamin A when eaten with the skin? It contains four times the suggested daily intake.
