Blackened Fish Recipe

Catfish is one of the fish species that people have come to embrace in the food industry. Did you know that there are over 2900 species of catfish? To name a few of the catfish are the: air breathing catfish, electric catfish, walking catfish, grunting or talking catfish, catfish that swim upside down, and the transparent catfish. A more amazing thing about the catfish is that its range of species can be as small as 1 inch long and be as huge as the European Wels which can exceed up to several feet long and can even weigh as much as 124 pounds.

Did you also know that the catfish have many external taste buds? Some of these external taste buds are located on their barbels. The barbel is the slender, external process located on the jaw of the catfish. The barbels somewhat resemble a whisker such as that of the cat. These barbels can also be found on other parts of the head of certain fishes. From this information, the catfish has the ability to taste something by simply touching it using their barbels. Amazing!

Fast Facts about the Catfish:

On 1987, June 25 was declared as the National Catfish Day by President Ronald Reagan.

The heaviest recorded weight of the blue catfish is 124 pounds. This was caught in Illinois.

In Paris, Tennessee, there is an event that is called the "world’s biggest fish fry." In this event, hungry guests will consume approximately 12500 pounds of catfish during the festivities. This occasion is said to last for up to 6 days. The "world’s biggest fish fry" began in the year 1953 which includes an auto show, parades, square dances as well as a catfish race!

The biggest catfish that was caught was a flathead catfish. This was caught on the Withlacoochee River in Florida on May 14, 1998 by a man named Ken Paulie. The catfish weighed about 123 pounds.

In 1975, there is also a festival in Louisiana that was founded to raise money for the St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church and to stimulate the economy as well. This event was founded by Rev. William McCallion and has grown to be one of the region’s most popular attractions. The event is called the "Louisiana Catfish Festival Catfish Capital of the Universe." The event is held on the grounds of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church located in Des Allemands.

During the festivities, there are live bands, games, pay one price rides, booths and of course, food! The event’s highlights are the 5-kilometer and the 1-mile race as well as the catfish-eating contest. The foods that are served during the occasion are mostly catfish and other all time favorite dishes that people love.

To mention a few are: catfish sauce piquant, catfish platters, po-boys and boulettes, fried crab claws, jambalaya, hotdogs, shrimp po-boys, soft shell crab po-boys, hamburgers, fried onion sticks, chicken strips, fried egg rolls, French fries, nachos and cheese, funnel cakes, chili fritos, candies, and homemade cakes. Sounds delicious!

  13. The blackened seasoning mix that you created will produce a lot of smoke in your kitchen.
