Useless degrees, never heard of them
Recently, I read an article talking about so-called “useless majors” in college, and I became so irate that I have been trying to cool down to express my thoughts coherently. First of all, I do not see how anyone could consider any major useless. Education is the key to everything. Money, health, even sex. Okay, now that I have your attention, let me make the point. Many majors will never likely lead to world wide fame. I accept that and I agree that some will not get you rich. But unless we educate ourselves, how are we to become the greatest nation in the world again, not to say that we are not? So majors are not useless. I take the point of the article well, that a few majors will never lead to wealth, but you never know. Listed among the useless majors is agriculture. here I seriously disagree. In the right circumstances, a degree in ag, as we called it in my old FFA days, can be not only lucrative, but extremely rewarding. I ran into an old friend from many years ago, just the other day. In talking, he told me he had become an FFA and vocational agriculture instructor, and when we talked, my friend simply beamed, as he talked about molding the young minds in his charge. Useless, I don’t think so. Ask the agricultural scientist if he feels useless, or the agricultural chemist, or a host of others. Money, to be sure, is nice. But do we not want to look to a higher standard? Is college just about having the right major to become wealthy, or is it about learning to do a lifetime of work, achievement, and enjoy? If college is just about money, I wish someone had told me before I wrapped up the better part of a lifetime learning. I think, if one has success in their chosen field, be it plowing fields, or developing vaccines, that alone is the greatest achievement any man can have. In just my opinion, happiness, and wealth go hand in hand. If one is happy with their work, be it discovering technology, participating in a Broadway play, or working as a cotton farmer, is that person not rich? Have a great day.
