LVN Programs Online

Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) training certification can be complete online in 12 months; sometimes a little less and sometimes a little more.  It is important to note at this point that an LVN and a Licensed Nurse Practitioner (LPN) are virtually the same job description. The difference is that in America the States of Texas and California still refer to the LPN as an LVN.

LVN programs online are not cheap.  Many people work while they attend classes online and some apply and receive student loans.  This is a decision that should be thought out carefully.  Additionally, if you think you might want to move up the career ladder to a Registered Nurse (RN) you'll want to take classes that can be applied to that degree.  In other words make sure your science classes are the same as those required to become an RN.

Accreditation is always the number one main concern with all LVN programs, whether you choose online or brick and mortar.  Without the proper accreditation from the governing nursing board in your area you will not be allowed to take the examination for your license.  Check the online list of nursing programs you may want to access through your local licensing board and make sure the LVN programs you're looking at are on there.

Good LVN programs will not only teach you the practical mundane applications, and clinical experience but they will emphasize cultural awareness.  Cultural awareness sounds so simple but it is a big part of what LVN/LPN's do.

Cultural awareness means that you understand the diversity of cultures of the individual with which you will work.  It means you understand the needs of people who are at different ages and stages of their lives.  It means that you've been taught and understand how to compassionately approach, interview, and build rapport and trust with your patient.

Look for LVN programs that will address the cultural aspect of your new career.  It is essential.  It ties in with another important aspect of the LNV/LPN role and that is monitoring and observing your patient and reporting to the RN in charge.  Different cultures and people of different ages exhibit their discomfort, pain, and ability or lack of ability to communicate about their suffering in different ways.  An LVN program that includes cultural diversity will give you the skills and awareness that will enable you to approach individuals differently based on the information you glean and learn about their culture and age group.
