RedGage Tutorial:  RSS Feeds

RSS Feeds are one of the new additions to RedGage!  Now you can externally subscribe to your favorite RedGage users.  The RSS feed on the bottom of each user's profile will bring you to a page with their activity and the drop down bar at the top will allow you to select your RSS service.

Now your friends at RedGage can subscribe to your uploads and people outside of the RedGage Community can follow you!  It is the perfect online solution to getting your latest headlines from all of your favorite website and blogs in one feed.

If you are new to the RSS world here is a little more information:

What is an RSS Feed?

An RSS feed is a subscription to regularly changing content.  Mostly used with frequently published work (or blogs), RSS feeds allow publishers to syndicate their recent activity.  Many websites, blogs, and other online content creators syndicate their content as an RSS feed to whoever is interested.  This way your friends can follow you and you can follow them.  Think of it as customizing your subscribtions all in one place!

Why would someone use an RSS Feed?

If there is a certain publication, author, or artist you are interested in, you might want to subscribe to their work.  Almost like a magazine subscription, this will insure that you don't miss out on anything.  I like to subscribe to multiple blogs and the RSS feed allows me to see all of my daily updates instead of going to the various websites.

How do I start an RSS Feed?

In order to read an RSS subscription, you will need a 'Feed Reader' that allows you to display the updates.  This will be the one place where your RSS feed is created and is called an RSS Reader (or a News Aggregator).  It will collect all of the headlines from websites that you subscribe to.

There are a variety of platform options that you can choose from and many of them are web-based RSS Readers (Ex:  My Yahoo, Google Reader, Bloglines, Outlook, Live Bookmarks).  Choosing an RSS Reader, is just like picking a web browser or email service- it depends on what you are looking for and what kind of computer you are using.  The majority of RSS Readers are free and there are plenty to choose from.

What is the difference between the RedGage 'Subscribe' button vs  the 'RSS ' button?

The 'Subscribe' button at the top of a user's RedGage profile will allow you to get updates of their uploads and activity on your dashboard.  Your RedGage dashboard shows the activity of your RedGage friends and subscribers.  The RSS feed is the external subscription.
