Money-Maker Memo #17
Build a Niche
Another aspect of building an audience, is determining your own niche. Here is a brief explanation on building a niche and why it is recommended.
What is a niche?
Your niche is the section of subject matter that you choose to concentrate on. A niche market is a subset of a larger market. By creating a niche market, you are narrowing your target audience.
Why should you create a Niche?
You might be wondering why you should limit your topics to one subject matter. Creating a niche allows you to concentrate your focus and your efforts. As opposed to trying to market everything to everyone, choosing a niche can determine your specific audience. By refining your goals, you can become an expert in that area.
Let’s say that you are looking for Thai food and you see a restaurant that serves Thai, Japanese, and Chinese food. Next door, there is a restaurant that just serves Thai food. Wouldn’t you assume that the restaurant with the specialization in one area will be ideal choice for what you are looking for?

Tips for building a niche:
*Start with your Interests and Hobbies:
Do you have specific skill sets? Does your job make you a specialist in a specific area? Does your life experience lean towards certain subject matter? Do what you like so that creating content is more enjoyable.
*Study demographics:
Find segmented groups of people based on various factors. Ethnicity, religion, lifestyle, age, and hobbies are all examples of factors that can create smaller communities within the larger population.
*Work backwards:
Do a bit of research first to see what viewers are looking for, and then fill in the blanks. If you have multiple niches, find the one that is the least competitive. Capitalize on an area of content that you think is being ignored! Find a group of people that have a precise want or need.
*Create a specific niche:
If you decide that your general niche is ‘pet care’ and you find that most of your content is related to thyroid problems in animals, you might want to narrow your field. Your specific niche could be ‘thyroid problems in dogs’.
*Keep keywords in mind:
While developing your niche, pick your keywords wisely.
*Consider seasonal topics:
Seasonal topics, holidays, and current trends in popular culture make for creative niche selections.
