My Adventures in Vertical Gardening Part One
This is the fence where I am trying out vertical gardening this year. It gets sun from late morning to early afternoon, usually around 10 am to 3 or 4 pm.
I started by nailing holes into the bottom of a milk jug, then tying pipe cleaners to the handle. I probably should have used wire, but pipe cleaners were what I had on hand.
I cut the top of the milk jug away with a knife. I was careful to cut in front of the handle; leaving some of the jug so the handle wouldn’t get flimsy and break.
I tied the milk jug to the fence after filling it with soil. I didn’t plant the seeds yet because we are still waiting for our final frost here in the NorthEast. I had to use a nail to attach the pipe cleaners for this jug, but it held. We’ll see if it holds through the first rainstorm, which is predicted for later this week.
This is the finished product. I’m not going for aesthetics; I’m going for practicality. A little bit of paint and a better arrangement might make this more pleasing to the eye.I’ll comment here if the pipe cleaners don’t hold. See my next vertical gardening blog to find out when and what I plant in these planters, and to see pictures of my other vertical gardening ideas.
