Dinner at Jalapeño

Ortigas Home Depot is your haven for home builders when the sun is up, but when the night comes, it’s a pandemonium for those who wanna relax and drink till you drop. Last time, we found a food joint that serves by far one of the best buffalo wings in the Metro Click Here. This time, we’ll see if this area continues to make us realize that not everything is what it seems.

Just beside Buffalo Wings N’ Tings, an American food joint, is another resto. This time, it’s Mexican. Interestingly, the two restos side by side depict the two neighboring countries in reality. You can just hop and dine between the two and taste a bit of what North America can offer in terms of comfort food.

The resto is called Jalapeño. The name gives you an immediate resonance of Mexican not just because of how you pronounce the name but also because this vegetable, a chili pepper to be exact, originated and was named from the town of Xalapa in Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave, Mexico. Mexicans use this as a component of their dishes and Chipotle, a smoke-dried Jalapeño chili, is a common Mexican cuisine.

The restaurant gives you a feel of the traditional Southwest. The wood and interior of the resto is typical of Southwestern architecture which mixes Mexican, Native American, Spanish and Western American influences. The Mexican flag hanging up front and the rustic interior lighting really gives you that Southwestern vibe. The resto has two floors. It’s a bit cramped on the first floor but there are also seats outside suited for those who wanna smoke. On the second floor, the dining area is much spacious and they also have a terrace which can seat about 6 people more or less.

The menu gives you your typical Mexican favorites such as Nachos, Quesadilla, Fajitas and Burritos. They also have main courses as well. We ordered the Cheese and Steak Quesadilla (P240) and the Grilled Chicken Mexicana (P190).

This Quesadilla is great. Although it’s not really the traditional and authentic Mexican version, it really throws a nice punch in the taste department. It’s cheesy and dipping it with the tomatoes and the sour cream is just splendid. You can feel the flavor of the cheese, the spicy salsa and the sourness of the cream exploding in your mouth. The beef tenderloin steak, however, is negligent. A bit more you should be added so that the other ingredients especially the cheese won’t overpower it.

This is a delectable Mexican main course which really shouts Mexican. It comes with corns and beans which are the main staples in Mexican cuisine. The grilled chicken is great. It’s juicy and tender and complementing it with the salsa gives you a very straightforward and delicious meal. We recommend you add hot sauce to truly enjoy this one.

For all those lovers of Mexican food, Jalapeño is a must try. The price of their offerings is very affordable and you get great taste and value for your buck.
