Russian MIG-21

In 1980, the National Security Agency (NSA) was involved in Civil Action No. 80-1562, “Citizens Against Unidentified Flying Objects Secrecy v. National Security Agency.”

Some of the documents related to that litigation that have been released are quite intriguing, as well as controversial.

Claim of UFO Shooting Down Russian MIG

One document in particular has raised a lot of eyebrows among Ufologists. It’s part of an article and subtitled, “The Federal Government has systematically misinformed the American people about the real threat…”

The following portions of the article are underlined:

“In March1967, an intercept technician with the USAF Security Service intercepted a communication between the pilot of a Russian-made Cuban MIG-21 and his command concerning a UFO encounter. The technician has since stated that when the pilot attempted to fire at the object, the MIF and its pilot were destroyed by the UFO.

Furthermore, the technician alleges that all reports, tapes, log entries, and notes of the incident were forwarded to NSA at the agency’s request.

A Reversal on UFOs

A few months later, NSA appeared to make a reversal in its former policy that UFOs were natural phenomena and nothing to be investigated nor to be concerned about when it drafted a report entitled “UFO Hypothesis and Survival Question.

The report, which was declassified and released October of 1979 as a result of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, chided the agency for taking a nonchalance view of UFOs.

It also stated that no matter what UFO hypothesis is considered, “all of them have serious survival implications.”
