Growing Garden Soil

Nothing is more disappointing than a failed vegetable garden. And nothing is more important to a vegetable garden than good soil. Organic material, and lots of it, is the best thing you can do to create a fertile bed for your veggies to grow in. New garden beds do best if compost, grass clippings, leaves, rotted manure and other organic materials are worked deep into the ground. Many how-to gardening articles recommend turning the soil to a depth of one foot and adding fertilizers to the soil. With the bio-dynamic method of gardening, the soil is dug to a depth of two feet and amended with layer upon layer of decomposed, organic materials. The deeper bed provides more room for plants to stretch out their roots, resulting in stronger, healthier plants and more vegetables. Read more about preparing the soil for a vegetable garden.
