Where were you on 9/11, 2001?

Remembering the day of 9/11/01

I was in hospital just out of surgery from having a knee replacement.  I was alone in my room with no radio or TV so my first clue that anything had happened was when my nurse came into my room and said something terrible has happened in New York and all the airplanes have been grounded.  She was as white as a sheet and said she has to go on a break and nurse "so&so" will take over her shift. It wasn't until my new nurse entered the room that I learned what happened. Feeling confused from the painkillers I was on because of the new surgery - I kept asking her to repeat what she was saying about 2 planes crashing into the Twin Towers as it was not making any sense to me.  Then she returns and tells me of 2 more  passenger planes crashing and my first nurse needed time to try to contact her husband and daughter who were due to fly across Canada that day.  My day became a swirl of nightmare from this unbelievable news, pain and morphine. By lunch time another nurse visited me explaining they have been put on alert to move as many patients as possible out of the hospital to make room for possible injuries at Vancouver Airport. So many planes had been redirected to land there and of course no one yet knew if there were anymore terrorists onboard any of them.  I was asked if I would be willing to leave the hospital by ambulance to my son's home.  Did he have room for me? Since my surgery was non life threatening - I said by all means move me.

Thankfully I never needed to be transferred from the hospital and the next day I saw the horrific images of what had happened!
