Why Is Gay Marriage A Political Issue
Gay marriage has been a hot issue for debate as more and more states are passing laws that ban gay marriage. North Carolina was the most recent state to amend their state constitution, stating that marriage would be the only recognized legal partnership and only a man and a woman would have the right to marry each other. Why is gay marriage such a political issue? Why are hard earned tax dollars being wasted so that a certaing group of people will not be allowed the same rights as everyone else in the free world? A lot of fuss is being directed at President Barack Obama as he has tried to remain neutral on this issue, but after facing criticism of being wishy washy on the issue of gay marriage President Obama came to the decision that he was okay with gays having the same rights as everyone else. Part of the reason for President Obama's neutrality was the big slit among his constituents on the issue of gay marriage. His ability to gain the support of young voters, and minority voters was a big part of his land slide victory in the previous presidential election. With young voters in support of gay marriage, and African American voters against gay marriage, it was only natural for Obama to exercise caution in deciding which stance he would take, but that brings up another point in question. In the years between 1876 and 1965, many states created another set of laws that would be refeered to as The Jim Crow Laws. These laws were an attempt to keep recently freed African American slaves from enjoying the same civil liberties as whites. Why would a majority of President Obama's African American supporters be in favor of a law so similar to the Jim Crow laws? Not even 50 years has gone by since these laws were amended, which means their are some people who actually remebered the struggles African Americans faced during this time period. Let's look at the reality of the situation. A same sex couple who loves each other wants to celebrate that love by making the ultimate commitment of marriage. They want to vow to forsake all others, and love each other through good times and bad. Where is the crime that is being committed, that states feel it necessary to ban this holy union. Truth, there is no crime being committed, this is just another instance where intolrance has won over common sense. Americans who support the banning of gay marriage should be ashamed of themselves, because intolerance is not a very Christian thing to value.
