For a non apple growing country, apples can be quiet expensive in the market. Prices even vary from its kind. So here is a Mock Apple Pie using Chayote instead of apples.

Chayote also known christophene, vegetable pear, mirliton, alligatorpearcomes from the gourd family.

What you need:

5-6 medium chayote

2 cups sugar

5 tablespoon flour

¾ cup flour

1 heaping teaspoon of citric acid

1 teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Dash of salt

What to do:

Peel the chayote and slice them into small pieces. Take a pot and boil them until cooked. Do not overcook them otherwise they will be too soft and mushy. Set aside

Mixed together 1 ½ cup sugar, 5 tablespoon flour, 1 heaping teaspoon of citric acid, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg and a dash of salt. Then combine them with the cooked chayote.

In a 9 inch pie pan with pie crust, pour in the chayote mixture. Set aside

Mixed together ½ cup of sugar and ¾ cup of flour, then add 1/3 cup of Margarine. Mixed them well together then sprinkle it over the chayote mixed on the pie pan. Bake them at 400 degrees for about 40 minutes.
