Amateur Golfers and Designer Golf Courses

Many of South Africa’s elite amateur and professional golfers have refined their game on plush designer golf courses in South Africa’s prime golf tourism destinations.

Superstars, Ernie Els and Louis Oosthuizen, prefer the poignant beauty and rolling countryside of the Garden Route, whereas Carl Schwartzel and ‘The Goose’, Retief Goosen, are far more at home on the manicured bushveld courses of the north.

The grandeur of prime signature golf courses appears to be attracting a new generation of emerging talent.

2011 SA Amateur Strokeplay Championships won by local lad

Mount Edgecombe local, Jared Harvey, currently ranked 5th on the official South African Amateur Rankings, used his years of experience playing the tricky coastal championship course at the Mount Edgecombe Country Club. He lifted the prestigious title of the 2011 SA Amateur Strokeplay Championships on home ground in early February!

He, together with the crème de la crème of emerging amateur golfers in South Africa, had quite a battle on his hands. The vast international field was made up of some of the most precocious young golfers on the planet, including strong contingents from France and Scotland.

The championships went right down to the wire, with a playoff between Harvey and 2009 Scottish Amateur Champion, David Law. Although the Scots were tipped to make the best use of the coastal conditions, which are similar to the links of Scotland, Harvey held out to sink the winning putt.

Young guns perfect their game on Garden Route Signature Golf Courses

As Els and Oosthuizen before him, another young emerging golfer is using the glorious greens and fairways of premier signature Garden Route golf courses to perfect his game.

Rikus Nortje, a proud amateur at the top ranked George Golf Course, has tasted success in his three years on the circuit by claiming the Mpumalanga Open in 2009. To date he has racked up four top 10 and eight top 5 finishes including two runner-ups

Many of his successes were on prime designer golf courses of South Africa including Princes Grant, Pearl Valley and Koro Creek, proving, yet again, the close association between successful emerging and established golf talent and great, well-maintained designer golf courses!
