Hosta Arc de Triomphe
Hosta Arc de Triomphe is a large variegated Hosta that grows a bit slower than some others. This variety grows to 24 inches high by 45 inches wide and needs a pretty large planting location to grow into. This is a hybrid of Hosta Foxy Doxy and the species Hosta Hypoleuca. This is an attractive upright plant that is resistant to slugs.
Arc de Triomphe needs to be grown in the shade as too much sunlight will cause leaf burn which makes for a very unattractive plant.
The leaves are a dark green with a very narrow yellow border which change to white as the season goes by. The oval leaves are 12 inches long and 9 inches wide. This is an uncommon plant and it can be somewhat difficult to locate a nursery that sells it. I’ve never seen it at any local nursery in my area and have only seen it for sale online and in catalogues.
The flowers are lavender, bloom from July to August, and are held 35 inches high. There is nothing special about the flowers they are simply “Hosta flowers” which are not known for their beauty or visual interest.
This is a nice solid Hosta plant even though it is not as flashy as some varieties are. Too much flash and dash in a garden can make things a little chaotic and sometimes a plant that’s a little tame but attractive is a good way to give the eyes a break. This isn’t a good plant for an impatient gardener but if you have a little patience while it gets settled in it makes a great addition to the shade garden.
