Why I Love Yoga

One of my favorite activities is yoga. It is my "me time". My time to clear my mind and relax. Yoga helps me to check in with myself. I often tell myself I am fine and that nothing is bothering me when deep down I am holding on to resentments. With yoga, I get to focus on how I am really feeling.

   When I first started doing yoga 15 years ago, I would skip the challenging poses and just do the ones that felt good to me. I just wanted to relax and stretch out. Now, I am curious to see where my mind goes when I am faltering in a difficult pose. If I fall over doing reverse triangle pose, do I think "I'm such an idiot, I'll never get this," or "hey, this pose is tough, good for me for trying it." Yoga helps me to see where my mind is at, whether I am in a positive or negative mood. Focusing on the breath during yoga helps me to relax when things get tough, on and off the mat.
   So I like the effects that it has on my mind. I also like the physical benefits. I like the fact that I now feel really strong and grounded in downward facing dog pose, when at first I was shaky and weak and couldn't hold it for more than two breaths. It means that I am getting stronger.
