Freezing your own Broccoli
Since my tastebuds have been resuscitating after chemo treatments, I have realized that the frozen vegetables that I buy from my local grocer don't have that freshness that I expect from vegetables. Whisper: they taste like cardboard. So as a tribute to my tastebuds, I decided to start freezing my own broccoli.
How to prepare Broccoli for your freezer
First step:
Buy fresh broccoli that is green or turning slightly purple.
Note: make sure that you take off any part of the plant that is withered or yellow.
Second step:
Cut off the stem, and break the broccoli into pieces. Rinse the pieces with running water.
Third step:
Blanche the vegetables.
- Boil water.
- Put vegetables in water about 3 minutes
- Immediately put the vegetables in ice water about 3 minutes
- Let the vegies drain
Fourth step:
Put the vegetables in a freezer bag and into the freezer.
The broccoli turn a bright green in the frozen state. Plus the broccoli tastes really really good in any dish. Make sure you put a date on the freezer bag because it lasts about 6 months. Although there are a few steps to preparing the broccoli, it is fairly easy and is quick to prepare.
