Mix Yourself a Mai Tail
The Mai Tai has many cheap concoctions poured in bars throughout the world. Some of these leave you with bitter aftertastes and nasty headaches. For mine the original is a drink to remember. Here is how to make the original. In 1944 Californian restaurateur Victor Bergeronsaid he wanted a cocktail “that would be the finest drink we could make, using the finest ingredients we could find”. The name came from a Tahitian friend of his; Carrie Guild who screamed “Mai tai – roaae!” after tasting his mix. This in Tahitian means “out of this world – the best”.
Ingredients for one drink:
· 25 ml White Rum
· 25 ml Dark rum
· 20 ml Orange Curacao
· 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
· Fresh Limes
· Fresh Mint
· Fresh pineapple slice
· 10 ml French orgeat Syrup
In a chilled cocktail shaker pour in the white Jamaican Rum, orange Curacao, orgeat syrup, 2 dashes of Angostura bitters, and squeeze half a fresh lime. Shake vigorously when all in together.
Make sure you have a generous amount of shaved ice in a glass. Now through a strainer pull all the mix in the cocktail shaker into the glass. Now to get the desired colored affect pour the dark rum on top. Garnish with the fresh mint, a fresh pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry.Enjoy “Mai tai – roaae!”
