Remembering September 11 ,2001

"We were in Saint John's, Newfoundland on that day !"
It is hard to believe that 9 whole years have passed since that aweful day . I woke up that morning and walked in to the living room. My daughter had the TV on and I saw on the screen a plane crash in to a building and I wondered what movie she was watching and then I suddenly realized that this was live coverage ,and this plane was crashing in to the Twin Towers.
My husband came home at noon and later that day , we heard the news that passengers were stranded at the airport because the US air space was closed . We hosted at least a dozen of those folks in our church basement . They slept on air mattresses with a sleeping bag and pillow but they were grateful . As the week went on some were invited in to private homes . The local restaurants provided meals, and the phone company gave free phone calls so family could phone home . We had just moved to St. John 's Newfounland that summer, and were astounded and impressed by the hospitality and generousity of the people in Saint Johns and across the province. Although all of the Atlantic provinces particapated and the rest of the country as well, I think it was later reported that Newfoundland showed the most generosity and hospitality .I know that at one least one couple became personal friends with another couple in our church .
That day and the events of that week will always remain in my mind .
