Public library usage in the papers
When entering a public library, what are the things that people look for? The right number of pages of a certain rare book? The ISBN or universal product number of a Compact Disc? Or just browse around? The Guardian ran a story “UK lost more than 200 libraries in 2012,” which shows how the numbers of volunteers in the UK continue to rise as the numbers of librarians continue to fall. Meanwhile, America is planning to increase public access computers. The country is also seeing more and more people accessing public library’s computers to search and look for jobs. The American Library Association’s publication “The 2012 State of America’s Libraries” practically is saying “4.4 MM Americans make use of their libraries for employment and job-related activities.”Libraries in the States are adopting more and more role in publishing and digital literacy efforts. There isn’t much data available to how Asians are making use of the public library in their regions. And even more limited data is available on public library computer usage in Asia and the Pacific. So it’s hard to tell. Despite digital citizenship and the Stop CISPA movement, we still get the sense of pride libraries have over the many volunteers they are attracting.
