The Johnson’s Baby Powder may enhance the ovarian cancer risk when applied for female hygiene. With more 1200 talcum powder lawsuits have been filed, where one of the petitioner was awarded $72 million compensation in Feb, 2016.

In May 2016, as per a lawsuit in Missouri, jury awarded $55 million to a ovarian cancer women who had used Johnson’s Baby powder for around 40 years. And three months before, a jury in St. Louis gave $72 million to the kin of the woman who died due to ovarian cancer because of using the talcum for decades.

Can baby powder cause cancer?

Women often use baby powder in the genitals to keep it friction less and dry. Unluckily, as per some studies, the particles of the talcum seek entrance into the vagina and reach the ovaries. Talc is a mineral like asbestos, a recognized carcinogen. Till the 70’s all the talc products were asbestos infected. Experts suggest that talc causes inflammation in the ovaries and enhance the chances of ovarian cancer. Breathing talcum powder can cause mesothelioma.

Researchers have seen traces of talc in the women ovaries prompting the growth of ovarian cancer. From then, the proof of risk has constantly grown.

  • Anticancer research in the year 2003- 16 studies meta-analysis revealed a 33% enhanced risk in the ovarian cancer with use of talcum powder.
  • Cancer Epidemiology in the year 2008- researchers of Harvard had a comparative study of 1400 ovarian cancer women and 1800 health women and linked it with the usage of talcum powder and found a 36% enhanced risk of the disease.
  • Cancer Prevention Research in the year 2013- with talcum powder use in the genital area, you get an increased risk of 20-30%.

How far is the risk involved?

As Per the American Cancer Society, the normal woman’s life span risk for the disease is around 1.4%, so even with an increased chance of 30%, the increase in the whole life is 1.8%. Talc being such a widely used consumer item, people should acknowledge the risk before using it!

Johnson’s Baby Class Action

In 2014, Johnson & Johnson was hit with a petition from a Missouri citizen who bought the powder and over time developed ovarian cancer by using the powder daily in the hygiene area. Another woman filed a similar complain in California. The talcum powder lawsuit reveals enhanced risk of 33% of ovarian cancer in women.

Malman Law is a well-recognized class action law firm. The company promises to file a class action for those who hold any claim against the Johnson’s Baby Powder. Several class action have been applied, however, they still don’t hold any damages for women who are a victim of ovarian cancer. They seek compensation on behalf of their clients who bought the product without acknowledging the threat of ovarian cancer. The attorneys will file individual petition on behalf of the women who developed disease over time. Class action and individual action will maximize the efficacy and raise compensation for the individuals.
