How to Be a Driving God

According to studies, many people believe that they are better drivers than they actually. For example, polls have shown that far more than 50% of the driving population believe that they are "better than average" at driving. However, it is technically only possible for 50% of the population to be better than average. Even if you really are an excellent driver, you should still consider these tips that can help turn anyone into a driving god.

Adjust Your Mirrors

Chances are you've heard about the dreaded "blind spot" that many drivers complain about. The blind spot refers to the area on both sides of the car that cannot be seen in the wing mirrors of the car. The blind spot is an incredibly frequent cause of often deadly accidents. This explains why many expensive car models have a feature that warns the driver of any vehicles detected in the blind spot. With most high-end car models, the car beeps loudly to warn the driver. Unfortunately, in many cases, the driver crashes any way.

Surprisingly, there is no need for the blind spot to be an issue. You can adjust the wing mirrors of your car so that no part of your car is visible in the mirror. This will eliminate the blind spot and allow you to see vehicles passing you on either side of your car.

Focus on Traffic Rather Than Road Signs

Novice and inexperienced drivers tend to focus more on the road signs rather than the traffic. While it's certainly a start to take into account road signs while driving, it is not enough. In fact, many experts argue that road signs make the vast majority of drivers complacent in that they come to depend on the road signs completely while driving rather than paying close attention to the traffic.

Road signs and lights are not perfectly applicable to every single situation. In fact, you may have seen an example of this yourself firsthand. A driver who sees the light turn green may plow through the intersection and crash into another car. In most cases, the car was obviously in their path, but the driver chose to plow through the intersection any way simply because of the green light. Road signs and lights are definitely helpful and have their purposes, but they should not be the end all be all. Your common sense will triumph shiny metal signs in just about every situation.

Keep Your Headlights On

Just about every driver keeps the headlights of their car off during the day. However, studies have shown that drivers who keep their headlights on at all times are statistically less likely to get into a car accident. If other drivers can see the intense glare of the headlights of your car, they will be less likely to pull right in front of you. Also, pedestrians and cyclists will also be safer because they will be able to see you coming their way. The benefits of having the headlights on at all times is so great that some countries like Canada and Finland require all new cars to have headlights that are automatically on at all times of the day. If your car has manual headlights, it is worth the small effort to turn on the headlights every time you drive, even if it's the middle of the day.

Use Your Parking Brake Regularly

Chances are you've had the parking brake of your car break on you several times. To keep your parking brake in good working condition, you should use it on a regular basis, no matter the situation. Basically, don't just use the parking brake only in cases when it is absolutely necessary if you don't want the parking brake to malfunction all of a sudden.

For more tips that will help you become a driving god, you should consider taking a defensive driving course. Even if you already think you've mastered the art of driving, a defensive driving course will certainly teach you a few new things. In fact, you may learn that weren't as great of a driver as you previously thought you were. Even if you learn nothing new from a defensive driving course, it can help lower your car insurance rates by making you eligible for a safe driver discount.
